Our Materials

At Coghlan's, we envision a future where the chance to create outdoor memories remains intact for generations to come. As a brand operating in the outdoors industry for over 60 years, we recognize the changing climate and its impact on people and the planet. That's why we are striving to make changes now so that we can contribute to preserving the natural world and personal safety for future outdoor adventurers.

Our Actions

Our eyes are open to the environmental impact that comes with all aspects of outdoor adventures, especially when it comes to manufacturing and distribution. As a result, we are determined to find ways to reduce our footprint. Here's how:

Manufacturing with Recycled Plastic

Beginning in 2023, we've taken steps to identify products in our line that can be manufactured using recycled plastic without sacrificng product performance. We've successfully built partnerships with suppliers that can produce products for us using post-consumer recycled plastic, thereby diverting plastic waste from landfills and reducing the creation of virgin raw plastics. When post-consumer recycled plastic can not be used due to product constraints, we will be opting for post-industrial recycled plastic.

As early as Spring 2024, some of your favorite Coghlan's products will be available for purchase using recycled plastic.

Bio-infused Materials

In addition to sourcing recycled materials, Coghlan's is looking at ways to leverage natural materials in the production of our items to reduce virgin raw plastic demands. In 2022, Coghlan's began developing certain plastic products with wheat straw bio-infill. This unique bio-infused material allows our products to maintain their performance and integrity over time while lessening the amount of plastic incorporated in manufacturing.

Packaging Choices

We've been investing significant time updating our packaging to ensure our products are secured and protected using the least amount of materials possible and to phase out plastic wherever possible. Since 2020, we've been working hard to phase out plastic blisters, poly bags, and plastic ties in favor of paper and cardboard that can be recycled.

PFAS (Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances)

Coghlan's is committed to providing safe and effective products that make the outdoors more enjoyable. As a result, we are committed to phasing out any products with PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) by 2025.

What are PFAS

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a group of manufactured chemicals found in everyday products. They have been used for decades to provide nonstick properties in cookware, enhance the water-repellency of outerwear, and make fabrics more resilient. Sometimes referred to as 'forever chemicals,' PFAS are highly persistent and difficult to degrade. As a result, these chemicals get absorbed in the soil, drinking water, and even our food. Although research is underway to understand the effects of PFAS better, the Environmental Protection Agency has identified these chemicals as being linked to harmful health effects in humans and animals.

Our Action Plan

Coghlan's has been investing time and resources to audit our product line for the presence of PFAS carefully. We are closely following state and federal government regulations to ensure that our products adhere to the standards and timelines outlined as we transition to being PFAS-free by 2025. We will continue to be transparent with our customers about products within our line that contain PFAS and ensure that we support our vendors in taking the appropriate actions to ensure compliance.
